Need to thin MM Acryl Grey Primer?

Post by nicholjm »

I'm trying out Model Master Acryl Grey Primer for the first time thru an airbrush. Do I need to thin it prior to use? If so, what do I use to thin it? I'm guessing isoproply alcohol, but I don't want any adverse reactions. Thanks!

I think it needs to be thinned like the rest of the Acryl line, I used isopropyl/rubbing alcohol the last time I used Acryl and it worked ok.

However, as far as primers go Acryl is a poor choice, it's the same chemistry as the regular line, so you don't get any improved bond with it.

Oh well, I went ahead and painted with the stuff last night. It seemed the consistency of milk straight from the bottle, so that's what I did...straight from the bottle. It did fine until about 2/3 of the way thru, and then I started having trouble getting it to come out of the airbrush. After a while, it wouldn't come out at all. Luckily, I got all the sub-assemblies primed. It looks pretty good so far! Maybe I'll get some pictures up eventaully, although it's not sci-fi. It's a Tamiya 1/35 Flak 36 gun.

I find most of the Acryl line is pretty thin to start with. THin only if needed.

OK, I got some photos up now. I just applied a thin coat over the whole model, nothing special. I think the lighter color will really help when I paint the final coat of German Grey, because that color is almost the same color as the plastic. I really liked how smoooooth the Acryl paint went down, almost as smooth as the original plastic. My Tamiya acrylics never went on this smooth. I don't know if it's something I'm doing, or the paint itself. I may just use this paint to do my 1/1000 TOS Enterprise (the next kit on my list).
