Where can I get those LED's that glow incandescent?

Post by modeler1964 »

Good day all. I know a lot of folks go with the white LEDs for window/porthole lighting but I am wanting a warmer look for a few upcoming builds. One of the builds is a 22" TOS Enterprise. The other is a K'Tinga. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

My advice kinda depends on what you're used to...

Old white LEDs, and cheap white LEDs like the LED Christmas lights in Target, etc. are extremely bluish. By today's standards I don't even consider them white LEDs.

Most white LEDs I buy these days are much better in that regard - though probably still not as yellowish as incandescent lights, they're at least a good "white" - so that alone makes them world better than crappy or old white LEDs. I'm generally quite happy with typical, current white LEDs - but I understand your needs or demands may be different...

You might want to try the "Warm White" LEDs sold at superbrightleds.com - According to the spec sheets they have strong output in the red/yellow color range - significantly stronger in that color range (relative to the blue part of the spectrum) than other white LEDs sold there.

I haven't tried the "Warm White" types myself but I've bought other LEDs from that site before and I was happy with the products I bought there. (For instance, the 360 degree diffusion white LEDs are great for ship lighting - stick one in the middle and it lights in all directions...)

Are you going to use single LEDs for each porthole or flooding the interior with diffused light?

Any way you look at it, I would suggest using gels (in the theatrical lighting sense—a colored transparent material to tint the light, cellophane even). This way, you can get the right color for each individual window (if you flood the interior, get a little square of color inside each window, if you go with an individual LED per window, tint the body of the LED with clear paint or permanent markers (yellow or orange will do fine, probably).
Sheer elegance in its simplicity.

Political unrest in dictatorships is rather like a round of rock-paper-scissors: The oposition goes on denouncing the regime on the papers, the regime censors the papers, rock-throwing ensues.

There are linkys in the sticky for where to buy. Mayn of places list warm LEDs as a 'color' option.

I found these sunny white leds while looking for lights for my model railroad.

In this picture, the left loco has a regular white led, the center has a sunny white led and the right has a yellow led. Go to richmondcontrols.com and click on "LEDS" on the left side.
