Any good articles on finishing Luftwaffe exhaust stacks...

Wise and Sagely Modelers,

I bring a question before the Council of Styrene and Resin. I'm interested in tips and techniques for painting and weathering exhaust stacks for World War II Luftwaffe aircraft. What tips have you? What helpful articles do you recommend? Perhaps I'm not looking in the right corners of the web.

It's been a few years since I've built a World War II bird, and since my skills have progressed substantially over the years, I'd like to do these exhaust stacks correctly.

As always, any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I see most of the are painted "burnt iron." But, they seem to have some other weathering treatment directly to the stacks.

I usually paint mine either flat black or very dark gray, then drybrush with either Rust or Testor's Jet Exhaust. I then spray exhaust stains with Tamiya Smoke. Sometimes I'll add a few layers of pastel dust in various shades, usually rust, dark brown, black or gray. What scale are you building? I usually build in 1/48, so, as always, YMMV.

IIRC there was a build in last months FSM that covered those rusty looking exhuast stacks. Let me see if I can find which issue it was.

I usually start with rust, and blue/blacken from there.

Terry, which "rust" do you mean? Is there a specific Pactramiyatallizer color? Or, do think good old red oxide primer will do?

Wow the Dora and Franz look great! Again, what "rust" are you referring to, Rom?

Any rust will do, usually what I have on my bench at the time! But, I do like Model Master enamels for dry-brushing. Mix a touch of color with a dab of thinner and it goes on like butter!

Tamiya "hull red" is a deep rusty color. Gunze, MM, and everyone make rust colors. It's the base, so it doesn't have to be specific.
