Aftermarket Decal Question

Post by starmanmm »

Someone told me that a good thing to do, prior to cut out the decal is to spray it with dull coat. They told me that what this would do is keep the decal in tact and not tear when you try to remove it from its backing.

Can anyone confirm this?

I don't like dullcoat on my decals. I find it much more difficult to prevent a sheen difference on the model. I like to make everything the same sheen then do washes etc. before dullcoating.

Use Microscale's Liquid Decal Film - it can be brushed with a soft hand-brush. One layer will provide plenty of material to make the decal easier to work with. It can be airbrushed, but I find it difficult to clean out of the airbrush.

Terry, one thing I've always wondered (and why I haven't bought it yet, lol), is what the decal film is made of? Is it acrylic? Is it an enamel? :-k

I have heard of this stuff. Have not seen it at the stores, so I guess I have to chase it down on the internet.

I'm not sure what it is. I wouldn't think an enamel, though. It could be some sort of urethane, I guess. It's flexible and soluble in alcohol, whatever it is.

"No, it's a dessert topping!"

Hmm...I may have to give it a whirl. Thanks for the information, Terry!

For what its worth, Kenny, I've used the stuff as well, though in a
different way-I have decal sheets in my collection going back more than
thirty years, and the Microscale stuff is an excellent way of preserrving old decals-one coat and they don't explode on contact with water.

Thanks for the encouragement, Doctor of the Affirmed. :)

I shall have to requisition this substance.
