The (Proposed) Rules- Traveling Model Challenge 2015

Post by M3 »

(AMENDED) TRAVELING MODEL CHALLENGE 2015 RULES

1. All teams will start with one relatively inexpensive, readily-available model kit, supplied by the first participant. Additional parts from other sources will be added throughout the Challenge. All parts that were part of the original kit, and any parts added thereafter, will be shipped out by the current participant at the end of each stage of the Challenge.

2. The Challenge will start on January 1st. Start date will be marked by taking pictures of the model, in an un-started state, on a newspaper with the January 1 date. Said picture post will take place on or within three days of January 1.

3. Every time you work with the model, TAKE AT LEAST ONE PICTURE AND POST IT! THIS CHALLENGE IS USELESS WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION!

4. If you are unable to work on the model for more than five days in a row, POST AN UPDATE saying "I have not had time to work on the model. I will work on the model again on (given date)". This will spare much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

4. You will receive feedback from future participants, as well as from readers of the Traveling Model Team thread. You are free to listen to and act on said feedback, or not... with certain exceptions:

4a. If one of the future participants requests pictures of a specific detail of the model in progress, or other information, the current participant should supply the requested pictures/information in a timely manner.

4b. If you are a future recipient of the model, you can suggest certain additions, processes, or add-ons. You can even send parts, decals, etc. to the current participant. The current participant is NOT under any compulsion to use said suggestions and/or parts, however. (If shipped, said parts MUST be shipped on with the model, to the next participants.)

4c. Bribes may also be sent. However, said bribes may also be accepted and/or ignored by the recipient. (Karma can be a cruel mistress, however...)

5. The model is yours for a month. (First person works on the model January 1-31, and ships on or before the 31st. February gets shorted-they have to ship the kit on or before February 28th: and so on.)

6. PLEASE ship the model on OR BEFORE the last day of the month- if it's the 26th, and you know you are going to be busy until the 3rd, SHIP ON THE 26th.

7. Make sure to take plenty of documentation pictures before the model is shipped.

8. MAKE SURE TO USE TRACKING AND INSURANCE WHEN SHIPPING THE MODEL.

9. Do not destroy the model!

10. Anything else is fair game. THIS LAST POINT IS CRUCIAL. Remember, your careful plans and work may be undone. DO NOT FREAK OUT.

11. The LAST participant is responsible for bringing/shipping the model to Wonderfest, and entering it in the contest. ALL leftover parts will be donated to the parts dump for Iron Modeler.

Anything/anyone else?

Possible amendments, posted for discussion:

A. (The "Unhealthy Attachment" Amendment) If the current possessor of the kit in question is suddenly struck by inspiration to finish said model, and/or refuses to give up ownership of the kit by the due date, said possessor may end the progress of the kit... if they are willing to send on a new base kit, and equivalent parts to those used up to this point, to the NEXT participant before the due date. (Equivalency of parts will be COMPLETELY in the judgement of the NEXT recipient.) This kit MUST be shown at Wonderfest, and attributed to all those who worked on it up to the point of completion.

B. (The "Round Robin" Amendment) Since some people may find the wait to participate difficult, ANYONE in the group can feel free to participate along... as long as they begin their participation on January 1, and inform the rest of the group as to their intentions. The members of the group may choose to opt in... or not. That traveling kit will then follow through displaced rotation from the original kit, and will ALSO end up in Louisville at the end of May.

Progression of PRIMARY KIT: Builder A to Builder B to Builder C to Builder D to Louisville.

SAMPLE Progression of SECONDARY KIT: Builder C to Builder D to Builder A to Builder B to Louisville.

Any member may start another rotation, after the other members have come to an agreement to participate in this second round.

Use of the secondary kit as a "hostage" to force someone else in the group to follow a specific plan of action will be considered... unsporting.

C. (The "Transport" Amendment) Each builder shall strive to keep the model as portable as possible. If the model needs to be shipped, it MUST fit SAFELY (with appropriate packing materials) in a box NO LARGER THAN 17" by 11" by 9" (the size of a standard Xerox-paper box), and must weigh NO MORE THAN 5 pounds. (The model MAY be disassembled for shipping, with reassembly instructions provided. The next builder may choose to reassemble the kit as instructed... or not.)

Feedback, please.

I don't particularly care for Rule #1 - this isn't Iron Modeller, after all. Last time I was taken by the diversity of the results. I feel it would be ... restrictive, I guess, to mandate a common starting base.

Besides, I've already started scratch-building. :)

Okay. Sounds good. First rule is amended (in blue.)

Anyone else?
