I apologize if this post is a duplicate, my search did not yeild any help. My question is.....what is a good pic programmer to get. I know nothing about pic programming. and wanted to ask before making a purchase. I would like to control strobes and flashers, etc....

The PicKit2 programs all (or at least, most) of the available controllers, and a non-clone costs less than $50. The down side is that you will need a ZIF socket module for it unless you want to program the chips in the circuit (which is a bit complicated). However, I found such on Ebay for around $20. The software for controller programming is MPLAB-IDE. A version will come with the programmer. The latest version can be downloaded from Microchip's website for no charge.
