Horror! I seem to have tossed my scrounge box during the move! Blast!

I'm scratchbuilding the Discovery from 2001 and need all sorts of tank parts - so I set off to by tank models. Luckily, it seems 1/72 tanks do the trick (I had no idea what scale would produce the right details).

Anyway, I now go out of my way to find cheap tank and naval kits for the parts. The armor parts, though, take the cake. Luckily, I saved all my spare photoetch bits...

I've got a box full of various bits and pieces from every model I have worked on. I keep thinking that I need to just pour some glue in that box and shake it a few times and paint what comes out as a Borg ship. :D

This morning I did buy three plastic 'echo microphones' from my local gas station ...

Yesterday I bought a working Konami game at the yard sale across the street for $1.00.
The Lone Ranger one... 'cause it's such a spiffy shape.
Don't care if it's still working... it won't for long! Muhahahahahahh!

Whenever I see something interesting I throw it into my junk box. Sometimes I build something out of nothing just to keep in practise and also to save money by not buying something. I've been finding that scratch/bashing building is actually more rewarding than assembling and painting a "kit".

Of course, according to a master model builder, putting together existing model parts and found objects and calling them a spaceship still isn't model building, and he goes on to say that model judges are tired of it.

More opinions of a master model builder who must not be mentioned here:

(Warning strong opinons, your mileage may vary.)

sales

Post by 1138thx »

Me too I scored big time at garage sales memorial day weekend.

The words I love to here the most: "Oh! you can have that model for a quarter . it's missing parts!."

I gata post pics of what I got it's just to awesome to keep to myself.

And all weekend I probably didn't spend more than 10 bucks for everything.

90 percent of what I do is total freeform and scratchbuild , but I read part of Cult tv mans article and it's way too arrogant. Anyone can be great at their particular craft . It doesn't make someone elses stuff less worthy.

Pretty soon it'll go from "a model missing parts" to "parts, missing a model", huh? :D

Seriously, though,... Kylwell, it was a comment of yours...(made several years ago, I think) that did warn me 'bout that very hazard.

Only I am a true model builder, for I compile my construction mediums from their elemental components. So called "scratchbuilders" are just mere "materials assemblers."

Now, I have to be off, for I have an audience with God!

I've got to sort the goodies and see what pieces are comprised of the

thrill the most.

I need something to store my sprues. I know I've seen someone's bench that has a "rack"(for want of a better term) that he stores them in. Is there something I can buy commercially that I can store sprues in?

A piece of plywood or chipboard. Seriously. Cut it to make a three-sided box with the fourth side being the back wall of your bench and the floor being the bench itself. It's what I do for odd shaped stuff:

workbench rack

Things get tangled? No worries! Just lift the box out of the way. I secured mine's sides with three-inch screws.

I hope this helps.

I heard on the radio this morning that Staples has pencil sharpeners for a cent each. :) I have several, but I'm going to get some more, if I can find some of the right shapes.

The ones I have are next best thing to an A-10's engines. :)

I was in a pound shop in Glasgow today, and i saw a great personal grooming kit. It was a small set of electric hair clippers, a comb and a pair of scissors...
I took one look at the clippers and thought: "Those are podracer engines..."
I bought four sets, just in case...

Try this enclosed cone shape:

www.wrsweeney.com

It stands over a foot high.

Great for that VTOVL design with the jets all around it that I can't recall at the moment.

We all collect stuff, scrounge stuff, "salvage" stuff from the garbage, buy "potentially useful" neat doodads ("Truly, honey, this whistling bubble blower will be really useful back home, whenever you're feeling down, just blow and wheep, here come the bubbles to make you smile. Can I have it?").

But do we actually use them? Do we do something to disguise their origins? Do we cut or alter them in any way to make them less obvious to casual onlookers (remember Qui Gon's "Gillette sensor for women-slash-communicator")?

If so, how'bout some examples?

No cutting necessary:

Take one marketing advertisement plastic breath mint canister. Sandoff the companies logo, glue the dispenser opening shut. Scribe some panel lines. Add a kit bridge section. And bingo a perimeter defense ship, cast resin copies.

The canister end's needed to be molded and cast, it was tricky to mold, and I didn't get vary many casts out of it. And of coarse I didn't get to that point in my molding and casting till after the Neil made his canisters. So paint and glue don't' stick and they are a part of the major structural support so the canisters pop apart all the time.

http://www.kc6sye.com/images/images_11_ ... ga_tug.jpg

So if you have a neat part but its made of some odd nylon find someone to mold and cast it for you. If you can find home for 10 or 15 casting the cost can be shared.
