Fiber Optic question

Post by Stilgar »

Im about to do my first fiber optics and I have a couple questions.

I have the fiber bundle all made and the holes at the proper locations.

What is best to 'glue' the fiber to the model? Super glue? I am worried about getting the positioning exact.

I do plan to leave some excess and do my final trim after the paint work.

All help appreciated.

I wouldn't use Super Glue... it is a CA glue and it will make the fiber very fragil and breakable... I use 5 min epoxy.

Don't use a too strong glue, i tried using tamiya on mine and the fiber just desolve on contact. I had a few bottle of testor clear parts cement so i tried and it work like a charm  , easy to remove if you got something to redo but still as a strong grip and the long tip of the bottle make it easy to reach corner...

I used superglue for all my fiber optics and never had a problem.... I just made sure to leave plenty of length on the outside and trimmed after painting.

Maybe there is something I need to learn?

I have to correct myself, superglue does indeed make fibers brittle. I was working on my NX-01 last night and superglued in some fibers which became quite brittle at the edge of the glue and broke easily.

I guess I never had this problem before because I always used holders to keep the fibers in place which minimized stress on the fibers.

I use Plain old elmers glue and have had Zero problems. I also heard of someone else using liquid latex and I am going to try that out next time.

I used hot glue and it worked beautifully. Permanently fixes the fibers in while allowing for plenty of flexibility.
I speak of the pompatous of plastic.

I should mention I did not use a hot glue gun, I used a hot glue pot. I applied the glue with a stick, that way the heating element never got close to the plastic or the fibers.
