Do acrylics work with other paint types?

Post by nanook177 »

I was told at my LHS that I could use any primer (Enamel, Lacquer, Etc.) for acrylic and that acrylic paint would stick to any paint underneath. I found this information highly suspect and would like to hear from the people here, who have far more experience with these paints than I do, if this is accurate or if I need to find a new LHS? Thank you!

Acrylic over enamel is A-okay. Enamel over acrylic, break out the Easy Off. I prime with Wal Mart equipment grey primer and airbrush Tamiya acrylics, Testors acrylics and even cheap craft paint acrylics over it.
I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason

Acrylics are the least caustic of the big three paints (acrylic, enamel, and lacquer) so they can be applied over enamel or lacquer with no problem.
