Brass and patina

I'm completing a fairie figure based on Tinkerbell, and I want to show the key she's lifting as brass with patina. Her hands were molded to the key and I airbrushed her body, so I don't see a way to complete the brass color without brushing. The hands to the key are very delicate to mask.

Would anyone have thoughts on how get the best brass finish with patina?

(Although I've never done this) I'd brush with a mixture of gold and steel (probably Testors enamels), dullcoat, then weather with washes of blue-green and burnt umber oil paints.

Try brushing on Vallejo brass and then wash with black/brown/green and very light drybrushing with green.

As long as you have a good clearcoat you won't have to worry about brushing on the brass as it would be easy to wipe off any mistakes.

I've used their iron set, makes for seriously real rust (because it is).
