Caplugs. Save or toss?

Post by Jonas Calhoun »

I've picked up various bottled paints (Kitbuilder's, Badger, Golden, Com-Art, etc) over the years. Most of them have red plugs in the bottles that have to be removed (kind of like a reusable safety seal).

I've been throwing them away, but I suddenly wondered if that was the thing to do, or should I save them and put the plug back in the bottle when I'm done painting?

What exactly are they for?

It's a secondary seal. Saves the cap seal some abuse, reduces the amount of air in the bottle to reduce oxidization. Some folk use them as little paint or glue tubs.

So should I replace 'em when I'm done with the paint? Seems like it could cause issues replacing them every time...but I could be wrong.

Naw, I think they're just to extend their shelf life. Once cracked open all bets are off so chuck'm if you want.

On mine, I just poked a hole in the cap and left them in. No harm that I could see from leaving them in.
