0.25mm Fiber optic drill bits....

Post by mspaw »

Not having tried my hand at drilling for 0.25mm fiber optic im wondering if people are using 0.3mm HSS bits and dealing with the oversize or trying to use true 0.25mm carbide bits? I'm not finding options for 0.25mm HSS bits which im sure would be a bit more forgiving than carbide if they exist...

Any recommendations would be fantastic.

Thanks

Just buy #70 wire gauge drills bits. They're .25mm in diameter. https://www.widgetsupply.com/product/BEH99.html

I use #80 bits, less slop around the fiber.

D'oh. And I went and bought these, where they did not pack it properly and most of the 0.25mm (blue) bits snapped. Yeah, the foam was not pushed and lock, so when they closed the lid.... These bits do snap fast.

But Kylwell's idea is excellent

Those are typically carbide and snap very, very easily.

Yeah, I should have bought those like you mentioned. But they go through plastic easily. Oh well, once I get through all of them, I'll look for the ones Kylwell mentioned.

Someone asked me to light up their Star Destroyer with 0.256mm FO. I am still contemplating. But not with these drill bits.... :D

Carbide cuts like a hot knife thru butter until they snap.

Sure is! The two holes took me a long time and I had to remind myself not to take any coffee before I start! :)
