Best Gold Paint?

Post by karim »

I'm looking for the Alclad of Gold paint.

I know about Alclad "Pale Gold"

I need opinions about its suitability for a 1:1 scale model of something that is supposed to be made out of real gold. The "pale" is a little concerning as well, as I'm really looking for more of an "Antique" Gold.

Is there something better?

Ah the search for the elusive gold paint.

Did it myself a while back. Most acrylics have way too big of a flake, Gunze being a nice shade & size. Vallejo has a few but most seem too yellow.

Which moves you to solvent based enamels. Used to love Testors Gold but haven't used it in a while. You could try MM Gold.

Wish I had more info on the new Talon line of paints.

Testors Gold is probably the only enamal I still have in the paintbox-I
like it, but you also might look at the Rub N' Buff line-I understand they're
quite good.

I would check out some of the hobby paints, in your big craft stores.
What about using baremetal foil, or if budget is no concern how about real gold leaf?

Gold leafing is a PITA. Gads I'm happy I not longer am an illuminator.

BMF would be a good solution, but the parts I'll be working with will need full-wrap-around and there will be nowhere to hide the seam.

Gold-leaf is a PITA as Robb said, and alas, budget *is* a concern ;)

It's gotta be paint.

Probably not the effect you are looking for, but for very small areas I've been happy with Tamiya clear yellow over a base of Testors chrome silver. Some variation of the base coat from chrome to flat aluminum to steel could give you what you need. I haven't tried that, though.

Will,

How "Real" does the Mr. Color look? It's hard to tell from a photograph.

My project involves a very "real" looking subject, and I'm going to be using real glass and other real materials, so the paint needs to have that same quality.

I may give the alclad pale gold a try (I know that the Alclad finishes look like real metal), but I'm still not sold on the "Pale" part of it.

Thanks everyone for the ideas so far.

In truth... not much. Better then most but not quite there largely due to flake size. Depending on what & how you might want to try some Gold LEaf and Metalic Powders Fine Pale Gold rubbed onto a flat black surface. The effect can be quite convincing.
