Display stand rod question

Post by CarlGo »

Is there a way to calculate what size rod to use when mounting a kit on a display stand? I have a Starcrafts Saber class kit that's nearing completion-- it weighs about 150g / 5.5 oz, what would be a good diameter brass rod to use that wouldn't bend?

I'm not aware of any calculations, sorry.

I've always just cut lengths of coat hanger wire. Seems to work well.

It really depends on the weight of the finished model, weather or not you are running any wires thru it, and of course, aesthetics.

Here's my Saber mounted on a wood base and a Laserfire Creations acrylic piece. The brass rod measures at 3/32" O.D. Seems to hold just fine.

Besides weight, the item's center of gravity and the option to mount a display also play a major role, as well as the display arm's lenth - the longer, the more wobbly things might end up, so that more than one arm might be necessary.

And tube is less prone to bending than rod.
