Source for super fine metal mesh?

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Source for super fine metal mesh?

Post by DeltaVee »

Is there non-modeling (less expensive) source for very fine FLAT metal mesh? I'm thinking a couple of square feet. I need it for a 1/350 lunar landing zone diorama. L'Arsenal makes some very nice 1/400 scale mesh. But $8 for 2.5x3 inches seems high for the volume I need.

I don't know about square feet of fine mesh but there are some permanent metal coffee filters with a fine mesh.

The dollar store has these cooking thing. I call it a thing as I do not know what it is for. It is a big flat circle with a handle and the circle is a metal frame with a fine wire mesh in the middle like a strainer.

McMaster-Carr will sell you a 2ft x 2ft sheet of 100×100 mesh, 0.006" square opening size, 0.0045" wire dia for $26.93.

Item # 9223T92

When searching, look for "wire cloth" instead of mesh, wire cloth is the trade name.

You might also check gift bands, for parcel decoration - there is some plastic (actually styrene) mash gift band around. Not certain if it would qualify for for small scale, but it might be an option.

Do you want wire mesh or perforated sheet? Wire mesh can go to fine fabric level where as perfed sheet can go down to single micron (or less).

Sorry. I lost the ability to get notifications and Im just now finding this thread. I need something that looks like 1/350 Marsden Matting. Is that cloth or mesh? Preferably, it needs to be flat. I guess I could just press it into whatever material I use for my base.

1/350 Martson matting would be more perforated than mesh. IIRC the holes were about 4 inch in diameter giving you a .3mm hole in 1/350 scale. There are, as a note, a number of companies that make it in photoetch.

Can you recommend a US source? I can find lots of 1/350 PE and plenty of 1/48 etc. PSP, but searching on a few terms I haven't come up with 1/350 PE PSP yet.

Closest I can find to a 4" hole in 1/350 scale (would be 0.011" in scale)

Thanks for the link. Looks good, but I confess $75 per square foot is probably beyond me, much as I want it.

What about just using screen... like you might get at Home Depot or Leows... for screen widnows and such?
