How to make photoetch parts with multiple layers of detail?

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

How to make photoetch parts with multiple layers of detail?

Post by MillenniumFalsehood » Wed Nov 02, 2016 4:14 pm

So there was a really good video on making photoetch posted here a while ago, and I've been thinking about using it to make some detail parts for the Zvezda Star Destroyer kit (mainly the hangar crane and some ribbed detail for the edges of the engine bank). But it only explains how to do simple parts with no detail on the surface. How would I go about doing parts with details on the surface? My theory is, I could etch the outlines of each piece, then apply the mask for the details and etch them again. Would this work, or is there a trick I'm missing somewhere?

This thread might be of interest to what you're trying to do:

Particularly the electro-etching ideas, which is more controlled than dropping it into acid and praying.

Here's how I do two-sided etch:

Some of my other albums have other examples, such as artwork:

to finished etch:

Do you have a link for the instructions. I have a project collecting dust on the bench that could use some etch for the inner structure once I get back to it.
