Casting resin ??

Got a question about techniques, materials or other aspects of physically building a model? This is the place to ask.

Casting resin ??

Post by flyfort17 »

I've always wanted to build a ship(the sailing kind) in water.
I was thinking about using a clear casting resin. I know it
generates heat when curing. Will it get hot enough to
melt the plastic hull? It would only be about an 8th inch
thick. I was looking at EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy.
Thank you
Todd

No.

I know that's not what the instructions say, but the kit's wrong anyway.

Be sure and do a couple test pours, using scrap models, to be sure it's going to work. My experience with casting using clear resins has been poor; but for my last project I used Crystal Clear from Michael's and it worked pretty well (my first pour had weird soap-scum-like bubbles all over the surface; but I washed it carefully and poured another thin layer over it, and everything turned out fine) (whew  ).

For building up waves your can use acrylic gloss gel medium, which has a mayonnaise-like consistency and dries perfectly clear.
