More Information / Recommendations on Millennium Falcon Kit?

Post by redapplesonly »

Hola, Modeling Gurus:

Maybe its "The Force Awakens," but I've starting thinking about building the Millennium Falcon as my next project. I remember back in the 1990's, MPC re-released their Falcon kit (in a "Return of the Jedi" box) and that sucker must have been about a foot and a half in diameter. According to starwarsmodels.com, that guy was 1/52 in scale:

When I look at the kits that are available now, I see a few options, none of which appear to be the kit I remember:

-- hobbylinc.com lists two different Snap-Together kits, one at $20 and the other at $60. Not sure what scale they are, but they are listed as being 8" and 14" long, respectively.

-- There are also three different kits at 1/72 scale. One is crazy expensive - $275??? Wow.

So I'm curious if anyone knows if the old MPC kit I remember was re-issued as one of the kits on the market today. Also, what kit do people recommend? I'm an intermediate-level builder myself and looking for a moderate (read: not scary!) challenge. One minus with this project is that all the Star Wars kits I see on the market today seem very, very expensive. I guess a follow-up question would be: are any of these kits worth the price, especially if you're a casual Star Wars fan?

Many thanks!

The Starship Modeler Store has this kit-
https://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index. ... p-max.html
It is 1/72 scale, prepainted and snap, but can be built up into a fairly good model.
The best IMO is the Bandai 1/144 Falcon- it can be found on eBay and Amazon. Crazy level of detail and designed for lighting if you wish.
The MPC Falcon was OK for it's day but the side walls are too tall and the rear engine deck has minimal detail. There are ways to fix it up but you will be spending a lot of time (aftermarket parts are still available)

The Revell 'Master Series' 1/72 Falcon is a repackaged FineMolds kit- lots of great detail but the mandibles are parallel and the main saucer hull is too flat- IMO that is a lot of money for kit with issues.
