Polar Lights TOS Enterprise 1\1000 pylon grilles

Post by david banner »

I'm putting together the PL TOS Enterprise 1\1000. Not much to fix on this one. Parts are pretty..pretty...pretty....good.

The one big problem I see in this kit, is they decided for some odd reason NOT to include the 4 rectangular grilles on each pylon. Instead they make you use decals.

Is there any accurizing parts out there to use instead of these decals?

Or how would you make them from scratch to add?

I"m surprised that I can't find anyone else crying about this anywhere on the web. Am I the only one that cares? Weird....

The thickness of the decals probably isn't too out of scale. A .005" (5 thou) thick brass part equates to a deflector grill that's 4' 2" thick in real life. That feels a tad thick to me.

Polar Lights TOS Enterprise 1\1000 pylon grilles

Post by david banner »

Just another FYI I thought of after I posted this subject:

even the old original AMT kit of the Enterprise that came with romulan and klingon ship back in the 70's had the grid lines on the pylons.

So now on this new version from PL, which is a bit bigger in size, can't include them?

Like Tank said, it's not a matter of "can't", it's a matter of wanting to do it correctly for the scale. AMT didn't care about that, PL does.

I took a quick look on the net for phoots from the show if the original studio model and I can't see that these panels stick up proud of the surface at all. If they do, then they can be replicated. If they are actually flush to the surface, then a decal or paint is all the thickness they should be.

Not declaring either way as I can't tell from the photos, but just suggesting that unless these things are quite thick "in real life", they would appear vanishingly thin on a 1/1000 scale model.

Well............they could have done something for detailing

Post by david banner »

OK, so I guess that means the old AMT kit that had these grilles may have been way off on scale and so I should not use that as an example.

But maybe this example will help:

This Polar Lights kit does have the grid lines on the inner nacelles. So if they can have this detail on the kit, why not the pylon grilles which were basically the same material in real life. And yes, the pylon grilles on the original ship were slightly raised. No more than what you see on the inner pylons. That's why I don't get why Polar lights didn't just include them. For the size of this kit, there surely should have been something worth being there. I think the decals are too thin to scale.

Even if they did add them, and they were a "tad" too thick, it still would have looked better for the detailing of this kit and no one really would have even noticed any scale issue. But then they did add their dumb logo to the bottom of the main hull. Sure they did that with no problems at all of course :D

p.s. I may have that photo showing the "slightly" raised grilles somewhere in my collection. I'll look for it. This is from the 11 ft. studio model "production version".

update to pylon grilles

Post by david banner »

I found this great site that gives the entire history of the models used on the show.

It states during the production upgrades of ships:

◾Nacelle pylons: four dark gray. brick-pattern inserts placed in slots

So not only are these decals black instead of dark grey, they could have allowed for the grilles to be flush with the surface of pylons. This kit is big enough to have that detail added in the molds made. It would have given the pylons just a touch of visual detailing. Just like AMT did originally (except they had the grilles a bit raised above the surface line, but for the 70's before computers helped manufacture these kits, it was pretty good!)

I was wrong though, when I said they were "raised" grilles. They are actually flush with the surface once you account for them being placed in their rectangular slots.

p.s. the site is: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Constit ... lass_model

Polar Lights TOS Enterprise 1\1000 decal sheets - windows

Post by david banner »

Oops! I goofed again.

I said the decals were black instead of dk. grey.

Once I fully opened the package and looked at all the decal sheets I see that they did also include the dk. grey grilles.

And the cross hatching is actually visible even to someone like me with bad eyes.

But this does bring up some questions for me to ask:

Why is there a black version of the grilles? When did they use that color and when did they use the dk. Grey version?

Also,

I need to know which decals are which type.

Can someone fill me in on the white backing decals and the yellow backing decals.

How can I tell which is the sticky type and which is the water slide type? I think the white sheet is the water slide and yellow is the sticky type. Am I right?

Also my eyes bad. I can see white windows on the yellow backing sheet, but I can't tell if there are white windows on the white backing sheet.

Also, would you recommend a better (more accurate) decal sheet for this model kit, that someone may be producing out there?

Just kidding.
The yellow sheet is stickers, the white sheet is decals. And, the decal sheet does have white windows. Yes, they are hard to see - just tilt the sheet at an angle under bright light and you should see them as well.

For other decal sheets for this scale Enterprise, consider this:

Or, this:

And maybe this:

Or, when it's back in stock, this:

As for reviews on the 1/1000 scale ship:
