Looking forward to learning the new interface.

dont forget or neglect to do a full site backup before you begin the upgrade.

and it's a terrible shame that older topics are being pruned on a site like this. It would indeed be a valuable resource to search farther back.
You can always re-set a prune or archiving feature if things somehow get unwieldy. But with just text in the forums it really should not be an issue. Especially not these days.
You can get an unlimited hosting plan for as little as $140/yr, if disc space / bandwidth constraints have been an issue on the site side.
Yeah, we backed up. Dan's an ol' pro at this stuff (and many, many thanks to Jonas Calhoun/ Dan Holmes for all his work at bootstrapping this site into the digital Age!)

95,000 PM's needed to be upgraded..... That was step 17 of 29. there's almost 20 years of data here - messy, lossy data that need curating by hand. again - Dan's the Man. 20 years of forgotten questions repeated 6 times a year. Pruning will be somewhat more .... aggressive.

If you want to help curate these forums, save the crap from the gems - PM or eMail me.

Could we take a crowd sourcing approach to this?

You dropped a 1. 190,000 PMs. I was impressed too.

And images...that's not so much a disk space but a display and usage thing. What happens is we have people then posting 30 pictures of their build, and then people endlessly quoting it. Maybe this time it's different...maybe not.

I'll let John flip the switch any which way he wants, but I'd say we all be good netizens if it happens. 30 images inline on my iPad suck when it's quoted a couple times.

(BTW--try the new Tapatalk integration if you are mobile....it's pretty sweet)

Somehow this has never been a significant problem on other modeling forums I visit. I mean, the solution to the problem you describe, posting too many images, and then carelessly re-posting them via quoting... is don't do that.

Why are the poster's name and avatar to the right? (I hate that!) How do I turn it back the way it was before (on the left) and the way it is on nearly all forums?

Not a big fan of the avatar to the right. Also took me a second to locate the "Reply" tag at the bottom of threads. It's kinda tiny and unnoticeable. And yes, we need header graphics. I know they are coming, but yeah the phpBB is bad.
I do like the "Quick Links" at the top left. Still looking around.

To the Air Boss and the "Elctron Wizards", my hearfelt thank you for the highly underappreciated work that you do!!!
Thanks for your marrrrrrrrvelous work on the forum.
I love the "neoclassic" look, very nice. And yes, love the avatars to the right of the screen. Left handed, (south-paws) people had the avatar on the left side of the screen for about what, 20 years? To me having the avatar to the right is just fine.
I am also one of those people that refuse ro click on photobucket links, regardless of how awesome the projects might be. Can't stand photobucket's "pop up" assault the moment I click their links.
Again, thanks a million to all the people that keep this forum open.
Happy Modeling!

I'm going to defer to OneZero. He's still playing with the new admin tools.

As far as the right side stuff, the next step with the new software is to add extensions and themes so each user can customize to their little heart's content.

OK, this has to be quick as I'm a break at work:

1) Logout Button - click on your name at the top right of the page. The dropdown gives you links to your profile, your own control panel and logout.

2) Avatars on Left/Right -- I think that can be customized in your user profile, but honestly I'm not entirely sure. I like them better on the left as well. If it turns out not to be individually customizable, I'll look to see how to switch it back for everyone.

3) Inline Images -- Since Users can now choose if and how they want to see 'em, the restrictions on posting inline images are lifted.

JUST BEAR IN MIND: This is a family-friendly board. The same rules that apply on our Facebook group about racy/offensive images apply here.

Good upgrade and I'm very thankful for finally being able to see images without having to click a link.

I'm not a fan of the color scheme, but I'll probably get used to it, and you can count me as another vote for avatars/usernames to the left.

Thanks to all that did the reconstructive surgery. It all looks good.
Thanks too for the allowance of images.

I also agree with Jimi in that a trip to the donation page is warranted every now and then. I'll be heading there now.

I like the new look. We need to have the Starship Modeler logo up at the top instead of the "phpBB" logo. Something cool like the AllScaleTrek forum has.
Yay, somebody read my request! I like how the logo is subtle and not Big McLargehuge big.

As for images, I am glad about the restriction being lifted. I would just hope that constantly replying with meme images and animated gifs (with no text substance otherwise) doesn't get out of hand.

And yeah, Big McLargehuge avatar pics and jibungous sig images should be curtailed.
