Sci Fi Kits at Wonderfest 2016

Post by sunburn800 » Wed Apr 20, 2016 8:15 pm

This will be my first trip to Wonderfest. Interested in finding out the types of kits may be available since I am not really interested in the figurines but more the spacecraft/spaceship kits.

Your first stop should be the Starship modeler table. :)

Usually about a month before the show, there's an online flyer available on the WonderFest website that includes information on the vendors that will be at the show. Google their websites and you'll get an idea of the products you'll see for sale.
Surrounded by unbuilt models. What the heck do I work on next??

Trust me, you will have plenty of opportunities to make your wallet scream for mercy during the show.

Pretty much anything you could/would be interested in will be there.

Here's the mantra for the show...."bring lots of money...the ATM's run out fast"

and then there's the deals made in the shadows, in dark alleys and backrooms for hard cash and cheap, ugly women.

If anyone has seen the ATM run out of cash the past few years can you let me know? I make sure every year that the hotel gets it serviced multiple times over the weekend for you.

Isn't that why we have credit cards? Or don't some of the vendors take those? (honest question, only purchases I've made have been with cash).
And... there's a ATM at the hotel? Can't recall ever having seen it.

Not all vendors take credit cards. The smaller GK vendors seem to prefer cash.

In the lobby, on the way to the restaurant, just before you get to the snack stand. Seriously, Jim, you need to get out of the dealer's room a little more. :)

I think he's got a teleporter rigged up between the suite and the dealer room.

Couple of observations about the list of vendors:

Federation Models doesn't have a booth this year? Tracy's always been a major presence in past years.

It says Fantastic Plastic has a table but Allen has indicated elsewhere that he won't be there this year. Is someone else manning his table?

I'm also missing a few other names - Mad Labs, for example.

Fantastic Plastic, IIRC, bought a table but can't come - I don't know if they sublet it or what, sorry. I am going to miss Allen, FP has been a great addition to the vendors the past couple of years.

In any case we have the biggest online hardware kit vendors, Starship Modeler and CultTVMan, at the show with a lot of stuff to sell - along with many other vendors that sell new and vintage kits, and of course several garage kit companies doing resin kits, upgrades, decals, and lighting stuff.

Not sure what's up with Tracy and FedMod - hopefully even if for some reason the store is not coming up he will!

Let's keep in mind that packing everything up and hauling it to WF is a big expensive under taking. In talking with a few of the owners, sometimes the sales the make at WF are the same or not much more than if they'd just stayed home. So coming to WF can sometimes be more PR than business. Remember this can be a week and a half disruption in their business when you figure packing up, travel, the event, travel, unpacking, then getting all the books squared....

Does anybody know how many people attended last year? I looked for such stats on the homepage but couldn't find any.

Usually the only stats they give are entry numbers but I'd say easily 300+ people attend.

hence the plus sign.

Then I read the history of WF and found they had 300 when they first moved to the Crown. We'd need Wedge to give us some numbers.

I thought they normally announced those numbers at the beginning of the awards ceremony along with the number of entries. With it being a 2 day event, I was thinking the number was 500-750, with a lot of single day attendee's... Then their are the people that will share badges....

I would take a look at Cult TV mans site for past conventions pics of the dealers room and also just Google "Wonderfest gallery" or You Tube it .
