I keep forgetting that Tamiya doesn't brush well--especially flat white and flat black. Even on small parts like landing gear struts. I keep both distilled water and isopropyl rubbing alcohol handy for thinning acrylics--it's hard to remember which paint reacts best to which thinner. Maybe I should ...

White's the worst. Somewhat OT 'cause you're talking about spraying gloss, but I recently had occasion to brush-paint flat white acrylic. I had the best results with Polly Scale. It went on smooth in a thin even coat that didn't show much of any brush marks. Tamiya and Testors were both giving me tr...

Isn't it superglue? I thought that's what was used for fake nails. It sure as heck sticks to skin! Does it set up in a few seconds, and if you get too close to it do the fumes burn your eyes? Dollar Tree also sells superglue, regular or gel. For a buck plus sales tax, you get three 0.07 ml tubes. On...

Thanks for your kind words, Gouf and Lonewolf. These ships are easy to build, and fun to paint. It's like figure painting. In fact, that Comet Empire twin-deck carrier is actually painted white with Ral Partha primer. Lonewolf, I'd be glad to add to what I wrote up (while it's fresh in my mind) for ...

OK, I got the one-day build done in eight days. ](*,) Here it is. Since I blew the deadline, I did more with it, like printing a decal to replace the sticker in the box.

I'm glad to see the deadline extended again. I've got one more unbuilt Comet Empire ship.

On the up side, it got me back to the workbench! I hadn't done any modeling to speak of in about a month. I got so darn busy with various responsibilities that I lost that irresistible compulsion to build models. Now it's back!

OK, I underestimated the demands on my time. I had prep work and grading to do, more than I realized, and if your wife and daughter are going to the pool, just try announcing that you're staying home to build models. You might guess how well that would go over. I also overestimated the ease with whi...

Just started a one-day build--FAIL

OK, I'll get this thing done within 24 hours if it kills me. It's Bandai mini kit No. 8 from Star Blazers. A Comet Empire single-deck carrier. So far I've done partial assembly and primered it. Here's the link. Surprisingly, paint I mixed for another Comet Empire carrier close to 20 years ago still ...

That third pic would be amusing with a word balloon. Something like, "Aw, c'mon man! Put my arm on already!"

Too bad. It looks pretty good for such a quick build. On the upside, you can tone down the weathering at your leisure. I guess building a model in 24 hours is like rescuing hostages. You have a narrow window of opportunity. The attempt must be well-planned, but you still risk a negative outcome. (Fo...

How about redoing the contest for June? I think the major thing that got in the way was Wonderfest. In my case, I've got material for a one-day build (Starblazers minis), but was working on other models earlier in May, and was thinking I'd have time later. I was obviously not thinking clearly: last ...

With walnuts! And make sure it's real maple syrup, none of that log cabin or mrs butterworth stuff.

But once you've used up your Squadron putty, get some Bondo spot glazing putty or 3M Acryl Blue.

I got into the Tenax rut, too. For a while I was Hebco's best customer! Now I use Plastruct and Testors, and save the Tenax for when I need it. But the only problem I had with Tenax was it evaporates so fast that bonding long seams required multiple applications.

If you install such a regulator in your model's base, you can hook up almost any DC power supply as input and safely operate the model's lights. Good advice to mount the regulator outside the model, for a reason tetsujin doesn't mention here: voltage regulators can be really hot, depending on the l...

Ja, I vill dooh it.

I still have a couple of unbuilt Bandai Star Blazers minis, I could knock one of them out in a day. This requires keeping puttying and sanding to a minimum!

They're cheap and come in lots of colors. You just need something to make the beam visible, like mist.

Just sayin'...
