When I airbrush Humbrol colors I ALWAYS use their thinner. They have one of the best Clear Flats out there and it only really works with their thinner... For most acrylics I tend to shy away from thinning with Windex. I do have a jar with the attachment for the AB to run windex through between color...

Lacquer thinner works fine for cleaning an airbrush via shooting it through, but lacquer thinner is what you use to remove teflon too; Badgers have teflon bearings and the teflon will absolutely be degraded by this. If you don't believe me, take a piece of teflon and drop it in a jar of lacquer thi...

Re: artist's oils for washes and such - question!

Thing is though that as i remember from art school, artist's oils take years to dry properly and its a bad idea to put anything over them, like varnishes and anything acrylic. I too am an art school grad and They told me the same stuff. Well it's not true of most modern Oils. If you paint figures a...

For small Vacuform job we used to use a heat gun like what they sell to remove paint. Works great once you got the hang of it. The cool part was after the piece was vacuformed you can go back and heat areas that did not pull down all the way while the Vaccuum is rinning.

If I had to guess as to why that happened it would be mold release residue. Wash the whole thing down with laquer thinner (the thinner will not hurt the resin kit) and then try gluing with 5 minute epoxy. Remember that the paste is not designed as an adhesive. so get a good epoxy adhesive and give t...

If you roll out Aves or one of the other epoxy putties in a sheet and use some cornstarch as your release agent you can make the same thig by draping it in the concave part of the spray can. It'll cure in just a couple of hours.

I had great success with the following... Take some steel wool, soak it really well in some brine, take it out and put in an open container. After a few days loads of rust will appear. Shake the wool over a piece of paper and you can collect the rust dust. Any large particles can be crushed. Either...

If you can find it, get a tube of the wax jewlwers use to lubricate a jewlwers saw. I will occasionally rub a file with this wax if i know the material I am filing is soft.

If you can't find that get machinists grade bee's wax.

Get a fine brass brush and a fine steel wire brush. Use the brass on the finer files and the steel on the courser. I avoid using thinners at all costs as they tend to melt the plastic and leave a residue in the deep recesses that may never come out. If you are going to be in the modeling hobby for a...

Hey guys, Just got this in the mail so I thought I would distract myself a bit from the real life stuff goin on in my family. Actually many forms of styrene are not effected by pure acetone. try getting some from the hardware store and test it on the sprue that the model was on. if it does not melt the styrene then go at the model in small patches lightly with q-tips changing the tips out often.

I have a custom made spray booth that my father had made for me when I was a teenager. being made of sheet metal, I periodically strip it. then I'll coat the inside with a thin layer of machine oil. this helps me wipe it out every so often to keep the paint dust to a minimum. I'd go with the plastic supply house. There is one I use here in Cincy and it is WAY cheaper to buy your styrene that way. I get them to cut it inot 2'x4' sheets for easier handling. But I could just as easily roll it up and take it as a large sheet.

what I would do particularly since this is a car model is wet sand the primer. That will smooth out the surface and aid a blemish free surface to put your color on in the next coat. Another thing to do is get an old scotchbright pad and use that to polish down the surface. If you don't have an old o...

I would suggest a flat brush for this. You have the basic idea right about the dry brushing. Just remember the key to drybrushing is to remove most if not what seems like all of the paint on the brush before you try painting I alway have a piece of cardboard to test the brush on. The darker the boar...
