Re: Silly paint question

The solvents will generally always attack the underlying paints. The thinner, whether mineral spirits or lacquer thinner, doesn't affect the binder & pigments.

Re: Making decals

I highly recommend Papilio decal paper.

As for the "fuzzyness" it's usually a result of using raster images instead of vector images.

Re: What works and doesn't work on plastics 1, 2, 3, and 5

There are a variety of bonding promoters made for glue and/or painting your usual low energy plastics like PETE, PET, HDPE. LDPE, PP. They work but are expensive & hazardous.

The flip option is to make castings of them. If one is so inclined.

Re: Disaster but hope.

One, make sure your resin is clean. A wipe down with lacquer thinner usually does it. Do not soak it in lacquer thinner. If you can, use a primer made for use on resin. Mr. Color/GSI Creos makes one. While it is best to let the gloss coat fully cure before applying paint you should pull masks off af...

Kleer was, may still be, the European version of Future. Never though to check if they had changed the formula.

Kylwell, Thanks for looking this up. Your saying Pledge Floor Gloss: https://www.pledge.com/en-us/products/pledge-floor-gloss Is not the same as the Future we knew and loved and that our cherished acrylic floor covering is gone for good. So FineScale is wrong about this? I'm sure the Alclad product...

The acrylic component, according to the SDS/MSDS, has been removed from the latest iteration.

That being said Alclad II's gloss aqueous is phenomenal.

Re: Tips on Tamiya XF-86 flat clear and X-22 gloss clear?

I'm looking for recommendations on thinner ratio and PSI for the Tamiya clears. Generally I thin Tamiya acrylic paint 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner and spray about 18 psi. But people are suggesting thinning the clears 50/50 or even 20/80 (paint to thinner). Any suggestions on using these? Here I ...

Properly applied you can tape over Alclad Chrome w/o an issue. The trick is that "properly applied". I've managed it a few times but it is by no means an XYZ process.

Re: Fitting acetate to window frames?

I prefer the "roll it between two rollers". This can be as simple as placing the material over a rod or tub of the right diameter and rolling in between thumb & forefinger. This can be tricky on smaller parts so you may end up rolling a larger piece and then cutting it down.

Re: Fitting acetate to window frames?

No tricks, just sand or file to fit. About the only trick is laying tape across the frame, mark where the frame is, then remove the tape & lay it flat. But that'll only give you rough dimensions. After that it's file to fit.

The finest I've found aren't actually paints. They're pigments from Armored Komodo. Gorgeous finish. Ambroid & Tenax both shut down years ago. MicroMark sells "SameStuff" which is purportedly a replacement for Ambroid. I've found Flex-i-file's Plast-i-weld a suitable replacement for Tenax.

Typically you end up with a semi-reflective surface. I've tried various metal powders, haven't tried Douglass & Sturges , in a combination of mediums but because the metal isn't in flakes that can settle they never get better than kind of shiny. Now the C1 and Armored Komodo powders do rub in qu...

Re: Using acrylics to protect Bandai plastic from enamels/oils?

I don't think I have ever painted enamel or lacquer over acrylic. I have painted acrylic over these paints. Since acrylics are water based they don't interact with enamels. Not all "acrylics" are water-based; there are acrylic enamels and lacquers. Tamiya "acrylics," for example...

Or just don't soak it in enamel thinner. Only some plastics are affected by paint thinner. It's only because Bandai doesn't limit themselves to just styrene that this is an issue.

IIRC Both Reynolds Advanced Materials & Smooth-On off technical bulletins that will tell you their cured hardness, flexibility, etc. Then roll over and get some specs on HDPE and MDPE and you're set. Excepting no one seems to use the same units so you'll most likely spend some time doing math.
