Check for your local plastics supplier, you should be able to get 4x8 foot sheets. Or order them online. Or hit the hardware store and see what they carry. You can get some pretty fine plywood.

There is a rather tedious and mask intensive way to mask checkerboard. It's done 2 stages using precision cut tape both as a spacer and mask. I'll see if I can dig up the tutorial.

Do you want wire mesh or perforated sheet? Wire mesh can go to fine fabric level where as perfed sheet can go down to single micron (or less).

Preshade with clear blue overcoat. They do. I've sharpened them a couple of times. Usually just re-dressing the edge but I've had to re-edge a few also. My fault not theirs.

Heck I've improvised with a decent spanner @ times.

The MicroMark chisels are nice, and they come pretty damned sharp but lose their edge faster than the Yellow House Model ones. YHM chisels are scary sharp.
