Why not just go old school and use a Grain of Rice bulb?

Those worked fine for decades before the LEDs took over and they do emit light in every direction.

Local sign shops can get sheets of styrene in large sizes (18"×24" and larger) . If they don't stock it they can order it from their suppliers.

A lot depends on who produces the kit. I have some which require a lot of work to get the pieces to fit well, others (like Atomic City/Captain Cardboard) look like styrene kits just from a different material.

I wish you luck - a lot of the studio scale builders try to keep yhe donor kits secret. Some are dirt cheap on eBay and if their value becomes known the prices will spike. At my sign company we recycle printed signs and use them again for clients. I would strip them of the ink instead of sanding them down. Different inks take different solvents, but be sure if you use lacquer thinner to wash the sign with 409 or Windex afterwards or you can burn the surface.

When cutting a hole or removing a section go smaller than the final desired result. It is easier to chop a smaller hole then slowly widen it the final size with scraping, sanding or filing than to cut it the exact size then have to fill gaps if anything turns out rough or not perfect.
