Man, that's discouraging. Keep us informed though, as I've got big plans for the stuff if it works out for you.

Good sources for general modeling supplies?

Due to a divorce and the price and shortage of gasoline, I'm not able to make the hour journey to my nearest model shop as often as I'd like/need to. What are some good online sources for general purpose modeling supplies, like Evergreen products, paints, etc?

I almost bought some during my last trip to my favorite hobby shop, but every bottle was as hard as a rock.

I really couldn't tell you. I'd been so gun shy of putting the money out to try casting again, so I haven't tried much that was on the market.

I like the Micro Mark stuff. I'm using a $2 kitchen scale from Wal Mart for measuring the mold material, and have had no problems. I use clear plastic, dixie-cup sized cups for mixing the resin. I eyeball the right proportions, and it works fine. Either I'm getting the hang of casting in general, or...

I posted a bit on ths a couple of days ago. I've tried casting on and off for almost 20 years, starting before it was commonplace using some odd materials. I haven't had much luck, normally getting a decent mold but very few usable casts. A couple of years ago I started playing around with casting s...

A casting tip from an amature

For years I've on and off tired various brands of molding and casting materials. I never had much luck with them, getting usable molds but almost no luck in getting a usable cast. The other day I picked up a set from Micro Mark. My first mold turned out great, but my casts all had uncured spots on t...

I bought a rotary type tool at a local craft shop. I believe it was for leather work. It had a wheel with like 5 different sizes of punches attached. You just rotated to the right size, slid in the stock, and squeezed the handle. It's not as good as a punch and die set, but it'll work in a bind.

Easiest mold material/casting resins?

What's the easiest molding material/casting resin out there? I'd like something that's forgiving if I don't get the ratios exactly right.

Endglow solid fiber optic cable

How much light will these put out? Will it look like a lit piece of plastic, or will it put out quite a bit of light? I'm trying to replicate engine glow on a ship, using LEDs, and I'm trying to avoid having an LED just sticking ut the end of the nozzle. http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/Endglow.htm

Generic lighting kits?

I'm scratchbuilding a model, and I'd like to light it. There's really not much to the lighting, maybe 2 LEDs and about 12 fiber optics. Does anyone make a kit I could just slap in place instead of having to learn electronics?

We're talking two different things here. To a real plumber, at least here in the states, plumber's putty is used to seal sink drains, among other things. It never really hardens, and couldn't be used for much of anything modeling related, except maybe as a holder for toothpicks holding parts for pai...

Lighting questions; LED versus lightsheet

I'm new to lighting anything but simple 9v powered Halloween props. I'm working on an aircraft carrier type model, and would like to light the main ship's propulsion as well as the cockpits of the fighters on the deck. I've been seeing more and more about lightsheets, and was curious as to what was ...

Would the shrinking be uniform if you cast a model in pieces? If you cast an aircraft and wings separatly, would the final parts still be the same scale?

Any updates on this stuff? I need a subject in an oddball scale no one makes, and it sounds like this might do the trick. How complicated is this kind of thing to work with? Do I need an atomic scale to measure it out, or is it forgiving?
