Re: Getting rid of the undercoat on chromed parts?

It's not clear to me why anyone would mess around with improvised and less than satisfactory solutions like brake fluid, bleach, or Coke, when the ScaleCoat stuff is reasonably priced, does a better job, and is readily available from trustworthy sources like Walthers. Some of it might be an effect ...

It has worked for me though it had to sit long enough for the Coke to begin getting moldy.
So, might want to refresh the Coke after several days.

Re: Getting rid of the undercoat on chromed parts?

Looking at those, I always use ScaleCoat paint remover, available from model railroad sources. That clear/yellow undercoat is a lacquer coating and VERY labor intensive to remove....if you can. Depends on the era/age of the chrome parts.....some undercoat I never get off.......the model car guys (me...

If you haven't already, even though the US here and Europe there are quite different, I'd suggest contacting the model railway community there in your country to inquire if there may or may not be paint remover products available there.

Re: Removing 20 year old paint

The model railroad hobby - in the US - has had plastic safe paint removers since at least the 1980s, for example, https://www.walthers.com/paint-stripper-remover-for-plastics-16oz-473ml-bottle It is reusable. Works on plastic and/or metal parts. But --- it and resin do NOT play together well, in my ...

This from the model train paint suppliers takes chrome off in less than an afternoon, often in less than 30 minutes.
Is what I used to de-chrome the Pilgrim Observer parts this past summer.

Yellowing over time is not a new phenomena, I have a 5 to 8 year old only partly used bottle which got forgotten about in the back of the pantry and it has visibly yellowed. EDIT: it seems to be older than 5, closer to 8, judging by copyright date on label. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/492669...

A couple things from my experience using Tamiya acrylics since the became available in Virginia in mid 1980s. That setup is 'Industrial Scale' compared to what I have; a little compressor about the size of a hiking boot and no tank at all!
But then, upper floor apartments generally tend to not have much basement space.

One other thing I thought of today, is it critical to have a moisture trap for the compressor when airbrushing acrylics? I am thinking it would be very little water? Consider it critical for any paint. Remember, as the compressor compresses the air it also compresses any and all humidity in the air...

I've been using Tamiya acrylics since the mid 1980s for both model trains and plastic models. I have not used their newer enamels and lacquers or their paint markers. Have used their spray paint. On the easy removal of the acrylic from both models and airbrushes, soak painted object in rubbing alcoh...

Simple answer is to go to Star Wars dot com and find images like this, and go, "Okay, it's that big compared to that thing" and go by proportions without worrying about specific numerals. https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/open-uri20150608-27674-1lg1jny_fbd2f4de.jpeg?region=0%2C0%2C1...
