Re: Micro Kristal (not so) Klear !!!

I have no solution I'm afraid, but in the future the best thing I've found is UV resin. Most craft stores carry it now (it's used a lot in polymer clay work), but you do have to get a UV light of some kind. The ones for nails are convenient and fairly cheap now on the Ali/ebay/Wish of your choice. -...

Re: What's a dental vacuum former?

Yes, they're just tiny, like 6"x6" or even smaller. I've seen people use them for modeling, especially things like cockpit canopies. Seems like it would be good for really precise and delicate parts.

Re: Problem with a seam across grooves

I have those and they work great. Another option would be making yourself a sanding stick that's the same width as the slots (including the paper) and use that. A little time making a special tool will save lots of time and frustration in the end.

Re: Layering Washes

In my experience, thinned enamels can still be disturbed after they dry with thinner. You can always "save your progress" with a layer of acrylic clear such as Future between whatever layers of washes you want to do. That's how I would do it. Just don't use lacquer or you'll have a worse m...

Re: ABS + glue + PVC = what glue?

I don't sand anything, just make sure it's clean. I figure any sanding would be obliterated, as I do apply way more of the cement than I would for a model kit, like 3-4 heavy coats in quick succession, until the surfaces are gooey. Would be quite a lightsaber, it's about 18" long and too big ar...

Not the tube cement, the liquid cement that comes in a jar with a brush. https://www.amazon.com/TESTORS-CORPORATION-3502XT-Plastic-Cement/dp/B01M06GYMN That's not to say the other wouldn't work, but I haven't used it since I was 9 so I wouldn't know. My go-to is always the Atlas Super Saw. I've had mine for about 20 years and it still cuts like nothing else, and I just saw that they're still around yesterday as I was considering getting another one just for kicks. https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Model-Railroad-Super-Saw/dp/B0006KQI0A Only thing I d...

Re: ABS + glue + PVC = what glue?

For what it's worth, my current project involves PVC, ABS, and kit styrene, and plain old Testors liquid cement has been sticking them all to each other just fine. I know that's largely MEK, so prior suggestions seem to be in that direction anyway.

Re: Clear coat to use over silver

Have you tried doing a barrier of Future first before your clear? Most, if not all, metallic paints seem to sort of de-homogenize when you put clear on them. My favorite, Ace Rust Stop Aluminum, does this so I've learned to avoid any kind of clear over it. I can sneak some on there with very light c...

I never ever got a siphon feed airbrush to work ever. They seem pretty finicky to set up, although I'm sure they make fancy ones that work great. I wouldn't even consider it as an option and can't think of a good reason to pick one. I'm sure someone somewhere has one, which you'll hear shortly... :r...

Re: Removing paint/ink from plastic signs

SuperClean used to be Castrol SuperClean, AKA Purple Power. It's essentially a sodium hydroxide solution, same as oven cleaner or drain cleaner. You could try it, but in my experience most of the signs seem to be printed with almost like a styrene paint, so the only thing that dissolves it is someth...

Most likely the valve is simply glued shut with paint. I didn't watch all the videos posted above, but if one of them suggests putting a strong solvent like lacquer thinner into the cavity where the nozzle normally fits then I've had good luck with that before. You only need a drop at a time. Let it...

There are two options, and neither works like the old one, where it would reset once you close the browser. Bummed about that, but the one I use now is "unread posts": http://www.starshipmodeler.net/talk/search.php?search_id=unreadposts Because at least it forgets posts I've already read. ...

You can also zoom only the text via the menu option. There's an...

I use craft paints exclusively (well, spray paint too, but rarely on models), and they work great. For airbrushing you have to make sure they're fresh (no goobers) and it helps if you strain your mix when you put it in the airbrush. Since I've never used model paints I can't compare the process, but...

If you did the casting or know what the metal powder was that was used, mix that with either a clear epoxy or CA to fill the gaps, if you want the surface to match.
