Re: Problem with a seam across grooves
Also, make sure grooves will align during the test fit. Deal with that first as best as you can. This might mean widening the location pin sockets or slightly filing the location pins. If this misalignment is particularly severe, you many need to cut one or more pins off and rely on careful gluing o...

Re: Using putty to fill gaps and seams
I have used alcohol to help sculpt and smooth Squadron putty into place which was handy for me as I'm a bit of a stone-age model builder . I would agree that it is best to minimize the size of a gap or seam mismatch by other means before resorting to putty (i.e. as mentioned in previous posts:...

Re: Very good, free 3D modeler software
Given that many of the comments on Blender's are over 8 years old, I think it bears mentioning that the Blender interface has changed quite a bit and is not so "key-sequence" dependent as it used to be, although learning key sequences is helpful and necessary at times. I don't think I woul...

Re: SPACE STATION 5-HUGE 8 FOOT DIO-how do i make it spin?
Okay, had an idea, what if I mounted a bicycle tire with spinning axle? Takes the weight off the wall, still able to spin, will reinforce the outer ring to spin on rollers that will be on the floor mounted on a support box. The spinning motion can come from there. Actually if you go for something m...

Pictures have to be posted on a third party site that allows for forum posting - not all picture hosting sites allow hotlinks to bulletin boards. Others that do may have terms/conditions/costs that may apply. SM.net does not have any mechanism to host or upload images. Images are imbedded in a post ...

Re: Figuring out Polarity of installed wires
Is there a way to check which wire is + and which is -, without destroying the LED? I was installing some LEDs and now starting to seal up, I realized I screwed up in my marking of 2 wires that are now hidden, to know which end is positive and which was negative. Wiring it up in reverse should not ...

There's a few things I picked up that I thought kind of begged diorama. I got a second hand Monogram X-15 which is mostly in one piece, but the decals are pretty much shot. I thought I could still build it in the landed high speed test version since the real one had most of it's markings burnt off!....

Re: Best online source for hemispheres?
Just curious... has anybody considered other materials, like paper, for larger sizes (assuming that you don't need something transparent) ? You could use something like a large balloon or perhaps an exercise ball as a form, then build up a papier-mâché shell over top of it. The minor sticking point...

Re: Magnetic energy conductors
The only way you will do it through plastic is via induction. Agree in that plastic is inherently non-conductive. You could make the shell of the ship out of steel which is conductive and magnetic. There is a niche of hobbyists who like using cans as their base material. Even then you need a circui...

Re: cheap plastics or balaswood
1/2" thick plastic seems unreasonable unless you are trying to make the skin itself structurally stiff enough to hold up the model's weight. I'm unclear as to the actual scale (20, 40 - inches, feet?). Just from seeing other people's work, it seems a more logical approach is to start off with a...

Re: cheap plastics or balaswood
If you're going big paper/card stock/foam core is probably the more affordable route. For the most part you can work with it similarly to plastic card; use lacquer to stiffen for light sanding , wood filler for gaps and edges, takes to light rattle cans, although other painting requires care due to ...

I bought a 600 rpm gearbox combo, and a miniature chuck. But I’m having trouble mating the two in such a way that I don’t get any “wobble” on the tip of the drill bit. Part of the problem is that the gearbox shaft has a diameter of 3 mm (and is a “D” shape), and the inner diameter of the miniature ...

Besides sacrificing to the god of shag carpets... I remember using a heated needle when making holes for rigging in braced airplanes (typically wwi type stuff). Re: Lighting Moonbase HELP
I would recommend that you understand your LEDs. These are diodes and really only want DC current. Diodes when passing current, which in LEDs is when they're lit, offer very, very little resistance. So, there will be math. Ohm's law dictates the relationship between the voltage and current in your c...

Re: Technique for drawing bulkheads from drawings?
I wish I'd seen this topic earlier. Oh well. The getting bulkheads back from a 3d model is a frequent problem in paper modeling because you can often get the model from modeling sites or from game object extraction, but these can be structurally unsound in cardstock without some backing structure. I...

Re: Pylon and nacelle alignment
I'd say use a template to hold the pieces correctly while they set. It's not unusual in biplane float plane, and other structures (wing dihedral for instance) where the connection points or connection geometries won't necessarily insure proper alignment. You may need to do some careful measurements ...

To some extent I would say, take anything you see here about model finishing and ignore it; no washes, no airbrush, no blending. I don't think you have to stick to black and white, although isolating the look might be easier in grayscale (outside of getting the whole thing some solid base color as s...

You can also zoom only the text via the menu option. There's an...
