Anybody tried an Arduino for this? I've never used them but I've heard they're really easy to use and get started with. IMHO, this is definitely a microcontroller project. How about a BASIC STAMP too?

I recommend Umi's suggestion for the adjustable regulator module. There's a few reasons: 1) High efficiency, you wont be dumping heat into your model and possibly warping it. 2) Easy. Im using the republic destroyer kit. Im having trouble lighting 5 leds wth one 12v battery.  Itll work wth   3 leds but when when i add 2 more i have to use another 12v. Cutting the fiber optic is pretty easy... they're just plastic. If you want it shorter length-wise, just about anything will work. If you want to divide it in half, use an X-acto knife and split the jacket along its length, then just pull out as many fibers as you want. Here's a neat trick... Warm u...
