Milk jug as a lens? Trying to difuse a light? Try getting some acrylic sheet and roughly sanding it with 120 grit. Ends up as a milky plastic and can be glued with CA. Yes, problem there is trying to find a piece that is already shapped to fit the curved area of the model i'm lighting. The corner o...

Glueing other types of plastic to styrene

What kind of adhesive could I use to glue plastic from say a milk jug to a piece of styrene? CA didn't work, and neither did another epoxy type glue.

All these ideas will work, sanding the lens, reversing the LED, etc. I like cotton as a light diffuser, it worked pretty good on my NX-01 deflector. I have a question: Where'd ya get the Lambda shuttle and is the kit still in production? I'm hoping to get one and put a Starship Lighting kit in it a...

Diffusing LED's

I've started work on lighting my Lambda shuttle model and am having a problem with the engines. I ran a few tests and found that in order to get the light scattered far enough that it looks "Normal", I have to hold the led a good 5-6" behind the lens. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/...

Biting off more than I can chew

*Mods feel free to move this to a more appropriate category if necessary* I've decided that my next project will be accurizing, to my eye, and lighting the ERTL Lambda shuttle. The main problem I'm seeing so far is creating the openings for the engine lights. http://hangarbay.tripod.com/sh22.jpg The...

Friendly plastic

Has anyone ever used this stuff? http://www.sunshinecrafts.com/body_friendly_plastic.html There's an article over at ARC about using it as a mold making material. He used bondo for his casting medium, was wondering if something like this would work with resin or maybe just something like Aves. Anyone?

"non-hobby" primers

ok I admit, I've NEVER used a primer before. Bad modeler, I know...

That being said, is there a brand or color thats best to use? I don't have access to any of the Tamiya or Mr. Primer stuff but can get something from a department store, like a krylon maybe?

Any suggestions?

So for something like...scratchbuilding the various raised parts on a star destroyer, you would 20 for that?

Forgive the continued stupid questions but this one is more...advice related. Plastruct requires a $20 minimum purchase no biggie there. I've never used this stuff before so I wanted to try different thicknesses and materials. I'm looking at ordering 2 .04, a pack of .02 and .01 styrene and a couple...

Abs/Styrene sheet thickness

I've been looking at the plastruct site and I'm thinking about ordering a few sheets in various thicknesses but I wasn't sure what everything meant.. when it says a thickness of .010 or .4 etc I know more is thicker, but is that .4 millimeters or what? I know this is a very broad question but is the...

I know I should not doubt, however I have a question about thine Aves. Does it dry out in the container? Is there much difference between the putty and the paste? I'm thinking about using something like that for making Lekku on pilot figures to make Twi'lek pilots for some of my ships. would Aves al...

Scratchbuilding and molding

This may sound like a ridiculous question but I have no idea where to start. I have an idea for a model in my head and a friend working with me to draw up some schematics....Where do people usually go next? Do you create from styrene sheets, or some other material in order to mold and cast parts lat...

Well I tried the isopropyl, it ate through the lacquer before it did the acryl, the windex doesn't seem to be doing anything to either, do I need to let the windex sit on it? Dang. Sorry to hear the alcohol cut into the lacquer. Windex does need to dwell on acrylics for awhile, at least in my exper...

Removing acrylic that is overtop lacquer

Ok I didn't see anything like this posted so here goes... I have a kit sprayed with a red lacquer, over that I was painting grey detail but some of the grey ran under the masking and now I have over run on some of the red. Is there a safe way to remove the grey acrylic without damaging the red lacqu...

Priming?

Is it really necessary? I'm getting ready to start building my FM X-wing and was reading up on colors and such. I saw that one person suggested priming the kit in white, but others say they use camofluage gray. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding something but any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
