Kool Shade

I know this is probably a dead end subject. Kool Shade has been off the market now for like 15 years and there's been no real replacements I am aware of. I think since 2008 or 2009? I know the pain of trying to buy the "real thing" is extremely costly. I think it's something like $1,000.00...

Re: dumb painting question

I'm not so concerned about the toxicity of lacquer thinner, although I'm not looking to find something that is going to give me cancer after I use it. I know the stuff is bad to breath and a charcoal filter is necessary. I'm looking for something that will produce good finished results, so really mo...

dumb painting question

Is there a difference between using your typical "off the hardware shelf" lacquer thinner to your maybe... "higher quality grade automotive lacquer thinner" for thinning out acrylic lacquers, or are they just one in the same? The only difference being that the automotive lacquer ...

Re: 3d model building/printing services

I haven't made it yet, but it will be a combination of kit bashed pieces to make the end result (various scale of kit parts used). So, its 100% custom. I'm a ways off from really getting started. I just was curious if it would be a crippling expense or not? I've no idea if some of the parts can be p...

Re: Nail Polish...anyone ever use them for painting?

Pretty sure they strictly use acetone although I am not 100% on that. I had thought of that...but I'd like to get larger volumes of solvents. Like 1/2 to full gallons of MEK, Acrylic Lacquer thinner, Acetone. Mineral spirits etc.

3d model building/printing services

I'm not sure where this belongs, but I am not sure who else to pose this too? I've a fairly large project I'm wanting to take on and some of the parts I'm making (kit bashing together really) to make certain components may still be out of scale. Either a little too big or a little too small. It's al...

Re: Nail Polish...anyone ever use them for painting?

Well, I'd be willing to pay someone to buy the solvents I want out of state and ground ship them to me, but I don;t know anyone in any neighboring states who would be willing to do that? And, UPS or some other outfit might not be willing to ship those items accross state lines and if they did, they ...

Re: Nail Polish...anyone ever use them for painting?

The Hardware stores (Lowes&Home Depot.) have those solvents, but they have all been reformulated for CA as you know. How good they are I don't know? Like I said, it's all those reformulated "green" EPA approved solvents. Call me stubborn or set in my ways, but I prefer the NOS stuff. I...

Re: Nail Polish...anyone ever use them for painting?

So, would using the nail polish cleaner be better than buying Acetone itself? I was under the impression that in CA (where I am) that you can't get real Acetone. You can only get that "green" EPA approved stuff. Not as I know/remember it? Maybe I've been wrong all this time? Also, wouldn't...

Brake fluid is super caustic. I know others who use it as a paint stripper. Never thought it would remove electroplating.

Okay, so pass on the Reveal paint stripper? It's not like you get a lot of it anyway. It's maybe a 1oz. bottle? I should be able to find the Super Clean at Ace Hardware.

Re: Nail Polish...anyone ever use them for painting?

Thanks, I thought of that but wanted to see if anyone knew in here or tried it? My biggest hurdle is getting solvents. I used up all my real lacquer thinner a long time ago, as well as the MEK, Acetone, and I have some M.M airbrush thinner, no mineral spirits because I can't get any of the real stuf...

I was curious if anyone out there knows of any kind of manual or guide about wiring and installing LED's and other lighting effects? I am SO BAD at it its embarrassing. Learning to solder is one thing, wiring LEDs and using circuit boards is another.

Really? And it doesn't mess up the plastic parts? I just have a bunch of chrome parts I wants to strip. I think it be better than just painting over the chrome I.M.O. Where can I find it? So far I'm not really getting any hits on who has it?

Re: Not a lot of experience working with acrylics

Yeah, I know there are a few other brands out there that have "pearls or iridescent colors" but often not the right ones I'm looking for. They may have two or three, but not all of them. To date, Daler Rowney and Doc Martin's inks are the only ones that have anything close to what I need. ...

removing electrolplate from parts

Anyone know how to strip the electroplated chrome off of kit parts? A long time ago I seem to remember reading that if you soak the parts in bleach that it strips the plating off. Is that the best way or is there another way?

Re: Not a lot of experience working with acrylics

I inquired about some things on the Daler Rowney web site, again they told me you can't airbrush the iridescents. I wonder why they made the damn iridescent inks if they wouldn't make it so you could shoot it through a double action? Probably came down to cost. Finer, higher quality pigments probabl...

6-8 inches distance? That's gonna be a lot of masking. Well, I was kinda expecting to anyway. It's just what it requires. I'm just kinda excited that the Daler Downey iridescent inks can be airbrushed because I gave up wanting to use those. One guy I sort of learned to airbrush from always worked re...

Re: Not a lot of experience working with acrylics

Did you do that with a single action airbrush or were you shooting with a double action brush? How much PSI? Yeah, even the Daler Rowney bottles don't say you can airbrush those iridescent inks. Kinda misleading. Unless I'm going for an "opaque" color, I was going to goof around to see how...

You were able to airbrush the Daler Rowny Iridescent inks? I was told you can't shoot those through an airbrush and that the pigments were too big and clog the nozzle and needle.

Not a lot of experience working with acrylics

I don't have a lot of experience working with acrylics other than on water color paper. I'm also looking at using acrylics which are not marketed as "hobby/model finishing" paints like Tamiya. These are Doc Martin's acrylic inks which mainly can be purchased from online stores or ordered t...

I have that book. Read it from cover to cover. I know a tank is the best way to create the 29hg's of vacuum. You just need to make sure you have the right sized tank to do the job and there are other little tricks to reduce air volume. Basically, if I know I need to evacuate 4 cubic feet of air volu...

Re: What's a dental vacuum former?

Good reference to have. I've always wanted build my own vacuforming machine. Part of the problem is space for the size I'd like to have and getting a pump that won't bankrupt me. A vacuum motor only gets you so far, you just don't get the "pull" that a vacuum pump provides or the pull down...
