I've used the Tamiya stuff quite a bit and have a feeling what you are doing will end in much frustration as the material isn't meant to do that. You can probably change the color but it seems like a bad solution instead of just filling, priming and painting the entire model as is usually done.

Try brushing on Vallejo brass and then wash with black/brown/green and very light drybrushing with green.

As long as you have a good clearcoat you won't have to worry about brushing on the brass as it would be easy to wipe off any mistakes.

Are you using the flat white? That one is tough to use and has given me trouble over the years. If you have the gloss version it might work better but I'd just keep playing with your paint to thinner ratio and find where it works best.

The paints are all a bit different and each is good for certain things. I use Tamiya in the airbrush and Vallejo for detail/brush painting. I thin the Tamiya with alcohol and Vallejo with water. The Vallejo is awesome for brush painting and so much easier to work with than Tamiya.

I'd second the tips about flat finishes and lightening colors for scale. Very important things to make models seem like more than tiny objects.
