I maybe off base but I think the copper piece was a ground radiator off some sort, and may not be important to your application., different from the ground we think of in circuitry. Have you compared a know good model 1/72 seat (say hasagawa) from
say a F-14/15/16/18 against your scratchbuilt seat.
Sometimes as you have discovered not all 1/72 are the same.
sounds like a bummer after all of your work.
Me I built a runabout interior using f-18 fighter seats, couldn't go wrong.

I also have a thin textured rubber pad that is labeled as a jar lid opener
about the size of a cd.
Hold jar in one hand, rubber pad over top of jar lid, twist
(a mouse pad is too thick, generally)

I use the plier method to, but I really mangle the jar lid
in the process.

Most manufacturers will tell you to only mix within family types.
Testors even had a warning about try to mix old family acrylics
with new family acrylics.
