This is "The Yankee Shadow" as dipicted in 'Backfire' by Ramona Luoise Wheeler, one in the series of Ray & Rokie stories as published in Analog Magazine... the story is quite good... but I'll admit the description of the ship was vague at best. I contacted Mrs. Wheeler via the internet, (isn't it great?) to find out more. We talked a little bit about her ideas of the ship, and from that I formed a design and the rest is history.
